You know that saying that everyone uses, “I’d know if I had something.” Well here is the deal, the truth of the matter. You won’t. Just like everyone is different so too are our bodies responses to infection. Like how two people can be in the same space as someone who has the flu. Person A won’t get sick and Person B gets sick a few days later. The symptoms for STI are consistent for each infection but how they show up in people is different.
This is why you won’t actually know until you get tested. If you have signs and symptoms, then the next course of action is to get a confirmation test and get treatment. Most STI can be treated with a course of medication prescribed by a medical professional. STIs like HIV and Herpes will require lifelong care, but that care is better than the alternative.
One of the biggest reasons why you should get tested is to avoid sharing the STI with someone else. This is the one thing that you don’t want to be sharing. STIs are stressful enough, let alone passing them on to someone else knowingly or unknowingly. When you are sexually intimate with someone you have a responsibility to act responsibly. Know your status and use a condom to avoid the spread of STIs.
